Wildfire danger in area looms

Recent area wildfires are a reminder of the hazards that go with hot weather.

Last month, firefighters with Lawrence County Volunteer Fire Departments and the Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) battled a wildfire, which they contained to 40 acres.

Shannon Coker, MFC Director of Communications, said the cause of the wildfire was undetermined.

East Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department also worked two separate fire calls. One call was garbage being burned while the other was a grass fire.

Nine out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans and thus preventable.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission reminds people to be fire-wise when burning debris or anything. Have a fire break, check the weather, check for burn bans and keep a water source on hand to keep the fire contained.
